Our Council is an affiliate of the YMCA!
Did you know that our council, Girls on the Run of Greater Detroit, is an affiliate of the YMCA of Metro Detroit? This is definitely a positive relationship that strengthens our GOTR council on many levels but our favorite perk of this relationship is that we can offer our YMCA program called STRIDE to boys. STRIDE has a similar structure to GOTR, providing lessons that foster skills in character development that are woven into a curriculum that integrates running. While these programs are completely independent of one another, one of the most powerful part of each program is the community service project that is completed each season. Community service demonstrates to the participants, the unimaginable strength that comes from helping others.
Here’s what STRIDE parents are saying:
“Our son has never volunteer before (he’s only in 3rd grade) but he really loved that part. Thanks for helping them find a way to help others.” -STRIDE parent
“The program experience was terrific–a great balance of socialization, peer support and physical activity. But the most impressive part was that community service project. The running part was what attracted us to this program for (our son), but the other experiences are what he talked about!” -STRIDE parent
“My son’s STRIDE team ran a water station at a local Outrun Hunger 5k near us this past weekend. The boys had a blast and the runners were so appreciative! Encouraging the runners seemed to be the best part of it for the boys. What a great experience!” -STRIDE parent
