Our school cannot host a team but we want to participate! Where can we go?

We understand that this fall our typical school sites will not be available to host teams. YMCA locations can be host sites for teams – local parks and community spaces are GREAT options too!

YMCA Locations available for a team:

  • Birmingham Family YMCA, Birmingham
  • Boll Family YMCA, Downtown Detroit
  • Carls Family YMCA, Milford
  • Downriver Family YMCA, Southgate
  • Farmington Family YMCA, Farmington Hills
  • Macomb Family YMCA, Macomb
  • Plymouth Family YMCA (PARC), Downtown Plymouth
  • South Oakland YMCA, Royal Oak

When will registration open for my site and how many girls can be on a team?

The host site, typically a school or YMCA, must have a completed site agreement before registration can be opened for the GOTR team. Teams consist of a 1:8 ratio.

How long do I have to register?

Registrations are accepted on a first come, first served basis. This season, registration will open December 2, 2024 and ongoing until March 21st, 2025. If a team fills to capacity it may close before.

How do I create my account in Active?

On the login page, click “forget your password?” and type in the email address that you gave to communicate with the YMCA of Metropolitan Detroit when you signed up for your membership. An email will be sent to you with your password.

If you are a member without an email address on file, or you do not know your email address that you use to communicate with the Y, then get started by creating a new account (apm.activecommunities.com/ymcadetroit/Create_Account).

If you are not a member, you can still sign up for an account to see all of the offerings!

No. By providing your email address, you will receive important communications from the YMCA of Metropolitan Detroit and its branches, mainly regarding your transactions and activities for which you’ve signed up. From time to time, offers and promotions from the YMCA of Metropolitan Detroit will be sent to your email. You can unsubscribe if you do not wish to receive promotional emails from the Y.

How do we play a role in our girls’ lives?

Lots of ways, but we start with helping the girls get a better understanding of who they are and what’s important to them. Then we look at the role of teams and healthy relationships. And, finally, we explore how girls can positively connect with and shape the world. And remember, we believe that life-changing experiences can be fun too—for everyone—the girls, coaches, families and other volunteers. So don’t be surprised when you hear laughter along with self-reflection and see beaming smiles across the beautiful, confident faces of our girls.

There is no team at my daughter’s school – can she still participate?

Yes! Most of our teams are open to the community, even if they take place at a different school than your daughter attends. View our Registration page. No team near you? Consider starting a team at your daughter’s school.

How do I get a team started at my daughter’s school?

Visit our Start a Site page to learn more and for the link to our Site Application! Basically, you need space (to run and for activities – can be a school, park, community center, etc), approval (from school or site administration) and people (2-3 coaches to lead practices and a Site Liaison to coordinate the team). We provide the rest, and we’ll help guide you through the application process if you have questions! Contact us with questions at gotr@ymcadetroit.org

I can’t afford the program fees – can my daughter still participate?

Yes! We never turn a girl away due to inability to pay. We will work with you to provide registration at a cost that is affordable to you. CLICK HERE to download the YMCA Scholarship Application. This should be completed and returned to gotr@ymcadetroit.org along with the appropriate supporting documents.

It looks like your season has already started – can my daughter still participate?

We accept new registrations through each team’s 2nd practice. After that time, we cannot accept any new team members. We invite you to sign up for our mailing list so that you receive notification before registration opens next season. Contact gotr@ymcadetroit.org for more information about our mailing list.

How do I sign up to coach a Girls on the Run team?

It’s easy – visit our Volunteer page for the link to complete the Coach Registration form!

I don’t have any experience – can I still coach?

Absolutely! No experience necessary to coach – and you don’t need to be a runner, either! Just an encouraging, enthusiastic role model for young girls. We provide training, detailed practice plans, and an awesome coaching team to ensure you have all the support you need.

Visit our Volunteer page for the link to complete the Coach Registration form and select INTERESTED IN COACHING/NEED PLACEMENT when prompted to select your site.

Questions about coaching? Send them to gotr@ymcadetroit.org

I want to volunteer, but don’t have time to coach – what’s the best way to get involved?

We have many opportunities to get involved other than coaching. Volunteering for Girls on the Run is a great way to see the program in action!
