What could have been a miserable situation turned out to be one of the brightest moments of our Spring 2018 5K event! A team from Wayne County, was being transported to the 5K on a bus, provided by annual campaign contributions. Unfortunately, the bus broke down on the way to the 5k and all of the participants were sidelined as they waited for another bus to assist them. They were the very last school to arrive–well after all of the other runners had started.
With true GOTR spirit, and resilience, Coach Molly, her co-coaches and a team of 15 girls, arrived an hour and a half late…in great spirits and full of smiles. In a moment that could have been filled with frustration, this team was able to turn negative thoughts into positive talk! GOTR challenges girls to develop strategies and skills to help them navigate all that life throws at them–including unexpected situations!
Our GOTR staff made it top priority to give this team VIP treatment. All hands were on deck to greet the team, to make sure the girls had “happy hair” & face paint, music, water–everything!
The very last girl finished the race at 3:05pm. An hour after most families had left the park. She is a child with special needs. Her younger sister finished before her, but as she saw Alana coming around the last stretch, she and a friend RAN BACK to finish the race with her! What a wonderful accomplishment! Girls on the Run inspires girls to take charge of their lives and define their situation on their terms! It’s a place where girls learn that they “can”! No limits. No constraints. Only opportunities to be remarkable.
